Learning a few troubleshooting techniques for your laptop screen can help you fixing the problem by yourself instead of calling in professional techies. One of the most common problems encountered with laptop screens are the appearance of strange colours. To learn how to troubleshoot laptop screen, you must also be aware of how to disassemble the system.

One of the first things to be done is to connect the laptop to an external monitor (for exmple: desktop monitor or television) and then check the video output. Based on the type of connector present on your system, you can use VGA cable, HDMI cable or DVI cable to connect to the external monitor. In most laptops, the external screen gets detected immediately and images will be shown on both screens. In case the image appears only on one screen, then use the Fn key and any one of the F* key to switch the video between the monitors.

If the images on both the screen are displaying incorrect or strange colours, then the fault lies with the graphics card present inside your laptop. If the image is only distorted on your laptop screen panel and appears normal on the external screen, then the problem is either with the graphics card internal display or faulty video cable, screen panel or bad connection. One of the troubleshooting techniques that you can do in this case is to reset the video cable connector present inside the motherboard. Most often, you can find the connector placed under the keyboard bezel or cover; try and reset this to solve the problem.

The other troubleshooting technique is to disassemble the laptop display and look for the video cable that runs under the screen panel. Sometimes a pinched or damaged wire can also lead to colour and image distortion. Once you place the cable, try wiggling it slightly while the machine is still running. If this affects the image and makes it appear normal, then replacing the cable will do the trick. If wiggling does not have any effect, then the fault lies with the laptop screen which will have to be replaced. The other technique is to apply a reasonable amount of pressure above the display assembly. What you can do is squeeze the area with your fingers and watch if the colours or images appear normal. In this case too, the laptop screen is faulty and will have to be replaced.

If there is a backlight failure in your laptop screen, then the monitor appears literally black but will work fine with an external monitor. In this case, the fault can lie with the inverter board, screen backlight lamp, lid close switch located or with the power management controller on motherboard “most common problem with “LED screens”. These will have to be fixed or replaced to rectify the problem.

Following these techniques can help you greatly when it comes to how to troubleshoot laptop screen. But make sure that you know what you are doing or else you may end up damaging the system irrevocably.
